Baptist Doctrine/Theology

The First Baptist Church, Wauchula and Whispering Pines Baptist Church, Sebring are hosting a Church Leadership Development (CLD) program. The CLD is a ministry of Leavell College (owned and operated by the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) and is for interested church staff and lay people who want to be all they can be for what God has called them to do. It is also for people who may just want to know more about the Bible and the work of the ministry. This developmental program is available to all persons regardless of educational background.
The first set of courses is focusing on Biblical Ministry. There are eight courses scheduled to be conducted for the Biblical Ministry studies. The first two courses (“Introduction to New Testament Study” and "Introduction to the Old Testament") were completed in the January-May, 2010 semester and will be offered agian when the eight courses have been completed. The second set of the eight courses ("Baptist Doctrine/Theology" and "Evangelism") will be starting August 16 at First Baptist Church, Wauchula and August 19 at Whispering Pines Baptist Church, Sebring. The classes at both locations will begin at 6:30 P.M. and end at 9:30 P.M.
The tuition cost for returning students is $25.00 and for new students, $50.00, plus textbooks. The textbooks for the "Baptist Doctrine/Theology" course are:
- Kelley, Charles S. Jr., Richard Land, and R. Albert Mohler, Jr., The Baptist Faith and Message. Nashville: LifeWay Press, 2009, $7.95.
- The Baptist Faith and Message booklet, June 14, 2000.
If you are interested in attending the Baptist Doctrine/Theology class, purchase the texts and simply show up at the location of your choice with the appropriate tuition fee.
Rev. Alan Permenter, Pastor for First Baptist Church, Wauchula, is the instructor for the classes at that church. Rev. Permenter has a Master of Divinity Degree in Languages from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and he is pursuing a Ph.D. Degree from the same school. Rev. John Girdley, pastor of Florida Avenue Baptist Church in Avon Park, is the instructor for the classes at Whispering Pines Baptist Church, Sebring. Rev. Girdley has a Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Seminary. Instructors for the Church Leadership Development courses must satisfy the seminary’s accreditation standards for professors.
The eight courses and their scheduled dates:
- Baptist Doctrine/Theology (Aug. 2010)—An examination of revelation, God, man, the person and work of Christ, the church, the Christian life, and the Christian hope
- Evangelism (Oct. 2010)—A study of the biblical basis of evangelism, church programs for evangelism, and personal witnessing
- Discipling Church Members (Jan. 2011)—A biblical focus on discipleship and an understanding of the function of the church regarding discipleship and personal discipleship development
- Missions (Apr. 2011)—Introduce students to Christian missions through a brief examination of biblical and theological foundations and a historical overview
- Apologetics (Aug. 2011)—Examine barriers to the Christian faith and the reasonable biblical responses to these barriers, including apologetic methods and convincing gospel presentations
- Hermeneutics (Oct. 2011)—Develop a sound method for biblical interpretation and presentation, including basic principles, steps, and major resources available for practicing biblical exegesis and effective presentation
- Introduction to New Testament Study (Jan. 2012)—A brief overview of each book, including pertinent geographical and historical information
- Introduction to Old Testament Study (Apr. 2012)—A brief overview of each book, including pertinent geographical and historical information
